embrechite

A type of migmatite where the crystal structures of the rock before metamorphism are partially preserved.

Embrechite is a migmatite, a composite rock formed when existing metamorphic rock begins to melt in place without fully liquefying. The key feature is that relict structures from the original protolith, typically a metasedimentary or metaigneous rock, remain visibly intact within the newly formed mineral assemblage. This partial preservation distinguishes embrechite from more thoroughly recrystallized migmatites where the pre-metamorphic texture has been obliterated.

The rock forms under moderate to high-grade metamorphic conditions, typically in the lower to middle crust where temperatures exceed 650 degrees Celsius but fall short of complete anatexis. At these temperatures, certain minerals melt selectively while others survive. The preserved fragments, called palaeosome, sit embedded in or interlayered with the newly crystallized material, called neosome. In embrechite, this boundary between old and new crystal structures remains sharp and recognizable under the microscope.

Embrechite occurs in regional metamorphic belts and migmatite terranes, often in association with granitic intrusions or zones of ductile shearing. The rock is commercially of limited interest as a raw material; its significance lies in deciphering the thermal history of orogenic belts. Geologists use the state of preservation of relict features to constrain the temperature and duration of metamorphic events that shaped basement complexes.

The term comes from the German embrechen, meaning to break apart or fragment, reflecting the appearance of angular relict fragments within the recrystallized matrix. The name captures the visual sense of an older rock partially disrupted and reworked by thermal metamorphism without being completely erased.
