Endogangue is non-phosphatic mineral matter enclosed within phosphate grains during mineral formation. Unlike exogangue, which surrounds the outside of ore particles and can be separated by conventional crushing and screening, endogangue is locked inside the phosphate crystal structure itself. This internal contamination directly reduces the grade and purity of phosphate concentrate and creates a real problem for beneficiation plants.

In phosphate mining, endogangue typically consists of silica, feldspars, or other minerals that crystallized alongside or were trapped during the growth of apatite and other phosphate minerals. The amount varies by deposit and geological history. Some phosphate ores contain negligible endogangue; others may carry 2-5 percent or more by weight as internal contaminants. This variation is a critical factor in reserve estimation and processing design because endogangue cannot be removed by standard flotation, gravity separation, or magnetic methods.

Processing implications

Operators must account for endogangue when calculating final concentrate grade and phosphorus recovery. Deposits with high endogangue may require more aggressive beneficiation circuits, including fine grinding to liberate particles and multi-stage flotation. Some operations use reverse flotation or selective dissolution methods. The presence of endogangue directly impacts the economics of a deposit: high endogangue content can make marginal reserves uneconomical to process, while low endogangue supports better recovery rates and higher-value final products.

The term appears most often in phosphate ore geology reports and processing literature from major producers in Florida, Morocco, and the Middle East. It is less commonly encountered in other mining sectors because gangue mineralogy is typically less problematic in base metal or precious metal operations, where internal contaminants are less common or less relevant to product specifications.
