craneman: the operator who hoists coal baskets above ground
A craneman was a mine worker, typically a boy or young man, whose job was to operate the crane mechanism that lifted filled corves (coal baskets) from the pit bottom to the surface. The crane itself was a wooden or iron frame structure powered by a stationary engine, usually a steam engine, that wound rope or chain around a drum. When the corves arrived at the top of the shaft on the cage, the craneman would position each basket under the crane's hook, secure it, and operate the controls to hoist it clear of the cage and swing it onto the nearby rolleys (small wheeled platforms) for transport to the coal stacks or screening shed.
The role required strength and coordination, but was not inherently skilled work. A craneman needed to understand the weight and balance of a loaded corve, typically holding between 12 and 18 hundredweight of coal depending on the colliery. He had to position baskets squarely before lifting to prevent them swinging dangerously in the air. He also needed to watch the rope or chain closely for damage or fraying, as a failure at height could kill workers below.
The title craneman appears most often in records from British coal mining between the 1820s and early 1900s, particularly in the northeast and Midlands. Where mines used tub-hoisting systems (running horizontally on rails), the equivalent role might be called a banksman or onsetter. The craneman sat at the control lever or brake wheel, often in a small elevated cabin or platform for visibility. In larger collieries with multiple cages running, there might be several cranemans working shifts.
Employment of boys as cranemans was defended by mine operators as necessary economy; a full adult wage was saved, and the work required less experience than driving the main engine. However, the danger was real. Corves sometimes slipped free during hoisting, and inattention to the brake could cause a sudden drop. Many colliery accidents involved the crane platform or the ground beneath it.
The craneman role declined sharply after 1900 as collieries adopted cage-winding systems that delivered coal directly onto surface screens or hoppers, removing the need for a separate hoisting stage. The term survives mainly in historical documents and mining memoirs, where it marks a distinct job category that no longer exists in modern extraction.
