endpoint: where the circuit or system actually ends

In electrical engineering, an endpoint is the physical termination point of a conductor, cable run, or communication line where connection occurs. It is the actual location where voltage is applied, current flows, or a signal is transmitted and received, as opposed to the cable or wire itself. Every circuit requires at least two endpoints, the source and the load.

Endpoints take concrete forms depending on the system. In power distribution, an endpoint might be a wall outlet, a terminal block on a panel, or a lug bolted to equipment. In communications and control systems, endpoints include connector sockets (such as RJ45 connectors for Ethernet), fiber optic terminations, or wireless transceivers. In industrial automation, a PLC input module or a sensor's screw terminal is an endpoint where a field signal enters the control system.

The term is particularly useful when discussing distributed systems where ambiguity matters. A technician troubleshooting a cable run needs to distinguish between the cable itself and the two points where it is actually terminated. Corrosion, loose connections, or incorrect wiring at an endpoint will stop current flow or degrade signal integrity even if the conductor between endpoints is pristine. This is why industrial installations require careful attention to endpoint preparation: stripping insulation to the correct length, crimping or soldering to proper standards, and protecting the connection from moisture and mechanical stress.

In network engineering and industrial control, endpoint has acquired a broader meaning to describe any device that serves as a source or sink of data on a network. A sensor sending readings to a server, a computer receiving commands from a controller, or a VFD (variable frequency drive) accepting a speed reference are all endpoints. This usage emphasizes function rather than physical location, but the core idea remains the same: it is the place where the signal or power transfer actually matters.

Endpoint is sometimes confused with the terms terminal and junction, but these are not synonymous. A terminal is a single connection point; an endpoint typically implies a complete termination of a circuit element. A junction is a place where multiple conductors meet; an endpoint is where one conductor stops. Precision in these terms prevents wiring errors and makes maintenance procedures clearer.
