enricher: the choke that floods cold starts with fuel
An enricher is a mechanical or electrical device that increases fuel concentration in the air-fuel mixture supplied to an internal combustion engine, typically during cold starts or low-temperature operation. On carbureted engines, it works by restricting air intake while the engine is cold, forcing the fuel jets to deliver proportionally more gasoline relative to incoming air. This temporary richness helps overcome the poor vaporization of cold fuel and allows the engine to turn over and fire.
The traditional enricher, commonly called a choke, uses a spring-loaded butterfly valve in the carburetor intake. When the engine is cold, a bimetallic spring holds this valve nearly closed. As the engine warms, heat from exhaust passages gradually straightens the spring, opening the valve and letting normal air-fuel ratios return. Manual enrichers, still found on some small engines and motorcycles, rely on the operator to open a cable-controlled lever as the engine warms. Electric enrichers use a heating element to accelerate the spring's response, improving cold start without requiring driver intervention.
Modern fuel-injected engines employ electronic enrichers that function through engine control software. The ECU reads coolant temperature and air density, then adjusts fuel injector pulse width to deliver extra fuel during warm-up. This digital approach eliminates the hunting and stalling characteristic of mechanical chokes and provides seamless transition to normal fueling as operating temperature rises. Some designs briefly increase fuel pressure at start, while others extend injection duration, depending on the fuel system architecture.
Common problems with mechanical enrichers include sticking valves from varnish buildup, broken springs, and vacuum leaks around worn gaskets. A stuck-closed enricher prevents normal operation of a cold engine; a stuck-open one causes excessive fuel consumption and black smoke during warm-up. Electronic enrichers fail less often, though faulty coolant temperature sensors can defeat the enrichment strategy entirely, leaving drivers with a hard-starting engine.
The term enricher describes the function rather than the component name, which is why it appears in technical literature and service manuals but is less common in everyday speech. Mechanics and technicians use it interchangeably with choke, though enricher is more precise because some enrichment systems do not employ a choke at all. Understanding enrichment behavior is essential for diagnosing cold-start issues, fuel consumption complaints, and idle quality problems on both older and modern vehicles.
