Enricher: The choke by another name
An enricher makes fuel richer, but the name misleads: the part itself does no enriching at all.
Outside the trade, "enricher" could mean anything that makes something better or fuller. In uranium refining it has a precise meaning. In automotive, it refers to the choke: a flapper valve in the air intake of a carburetted engine that cuts off or restricts the flow of air to the engine when cold.
The enricher works on a simple principle. At cold start, fuel does not vaporize well. The engine needs a higher proportion of fuel to air than it does when warm. By closing or partially closing the enricher, less air enters the carburettor. The fuel-air mixture becomes richer, meaning it contains more fuel relative to air. This allows the cold engine to ignite and run.
The misnomer is real and persistent. The enricher does not enrich anything. It restricts air, not adds fuel. The fuel metering stays the same. The mixture becomes richer only because air volume drops. Calling it an "air gate" or "air valve" would be literal, but "choke" captures what it does mechanically: it chokes off the air supply.
Why "enricher" took hold remains rooted in the shop floor. Mechanics describe the effect from the driver's perspective: when you pull the enricher, the fuel mixture gets richer and the cold engine starts. The term names the purpose, not the mechanism. Once established in speech and manuals, the name stuck, especially in European automotive culture, even as technicians knew the physics differed from the phrasing.
