EPAS: steering that runs on electricity, not engine power
Electric power-assisted steering, or EPAS, replaces the hydraulic pump and pressure lines of conventional power steering with an electric motor mounted directly on or near the steering rack. The motor engages only when needed, reducing friction and parasitic load on the engine. A control module monitors steering wheel torque, vehicle speed, and road conditions to modulate motor assistance in real time.
The electric motor is typically a brushless DC or permanent-magnet AC unit rated between 2 and 15 kilowatts depending on vehicle class. In most passenger cars, the motor bolts to the steering column via a gear reduction (often a 15:1 or 20:1 ratio) or directly couples to the rack pinion. Some heavy-duty trucks use a belt-driven assist motor on the pump, a hybrid approach called electro-hydraulic steering that retains fluid lines but eliminates engine-driven pump loss.
The advantages drive adoption: EPAS improves fuel economy by 3 to 5 percent in EPA testing by cutting parasitic drag. The system enables lane-keeping assist, adaptive steering feel, and automated parking features that require variable electrical control. Setup is also lighter and cheaper to package than hydraulic lines running the length of the chassis. Weight savings of 4 to 8 kilograms are typical for mid-size sedans.
Failure modes and diagnostics
A failed EPAS motor usually triggers a fault code and reduced assist; drivers notice heavy steering feel similar to power steering failure. Unlike hydraulics, an electric motor cannot seize gradually. Control module software must manage thermal throttling under sustained load, such as sustained parking maneuvers in winter cold. Battery voltage sag during engine cranking can momentarily cut assist on older systems with undersized capacitors.EPAS adoption accelerated after 2005 as electric motors became reliable and control chips affordable. Most manual transmissions and base-model cars still use hydraulic steering because EPAS cost saving is marginal on these platforms. Electrified vehicles (hybrids and battery electric) mandate EPAS because there is no engine-driven pump available. All major OEMs now offer EPAS on 90 percent of lineups above entry level.
