caliper: the clamp that squeezes your wheels to stop

A caliper is the hydraulic or mechanical device mounted over a brake disc (rotor) that converts fluid pressure or cable tension into clamping force. When you press the brake pedal, the caliper squeezes a pair of friction pads against both sides of the spinning disc, creating the resistance that slows or stops the vehicle. It is the working end of the entire brake system, and its effectiveness determines stopping performance and safety.

Automotive calipers come in two main types: floating and fixed. A fixed caliper has pistons on both sides of the rotor and does not move relative to the rotor; it is heavier but offers even pad wear and strong initial bite. A floating (or sliding) caliper has pistons only on the inboard side and the entire caliper body slides on pins or bushings to center itself; this design is lighter, cheaper, and dominates passenger vehicles. Larger vehicles and performance machines often use multi-piston designs with four, six, or even eight pistons to distribute clamping force more evenly across larger pads and rotors.

Calipers operate on hydraulic pressure delivered through brake lines filled with DOT 3, 4, or 5.1 fluid. When pressure from the master cylinder reaches the caliper, it pushes pistons outward, which move the pads into contact with the rotor. A spring or rubber seal retracts the pistons slightly when pressure is released, creating the small clearance needed to prevent drag. This retraction is critical; if it fails, the pads stay in contact and the brake overheats, reducing stopping power and risking failure.

Common failure modes and wear

Calipers fail when seals degrade, allowing fluid to leak or pistons to seize. A seized piston holds pads against the rotor even when brakes are released, causing rapid pad wear, rotor glazing, and heat buildup. Corrosion of piston bores and guide pins is common in wet or salty climates. Uneven caliper function between front wheels creates pulling to one side during braking. Pad material deposited on rotor surfaces or piston scoring reduces clamping efficiency and pad life. Proper flushing of brake fluid every one to two years and timely pad replacement help keep calipers healthy.

The term caliper itself comes from the tool of the same name, a measuring device with two legs that close on an object to gauge its thickness. The brake caliper works by the same principle: two surfaces (the pads) close on a central object (the rotor) to apply force. In the automotive trade, the caliper is often the first component a technician inspects when diagnosing poor braking feel, noise, or uneven stopping.
