Eurobalise

A specific kind of balise used in the European Train Control System.

Eurobalise: trackside beacon for ETCS train detection

A Eurobalise is a wayside beacon installed between or beside railway rails that transmits safety-critical information to passing trains via inductive coupling. Operating at 27 MHz, it sends data to an onboard antenna as a train approaches, typically within detection range of 0.5 to 2 metres depending on antenna design and installation height. The device is part of the European Train Control System (ETCS), which replaces multiple national signalling standards across European railways with a unified safety infrastructure.

The physical beacon sits in a weatherproof housing mounted on or below the track structure. It contains no active power source; instead, the train's passing antenna generates the electromagnetic field that powers the balise momentarily and triggers its coded transmission. This passive design makes Eurobalises rugged and maintenance-light compared to earlier loop-based systems. Each beacon transmits a 100-byte telegram containing speed restrictions, permission to proceed, track geometry data, or failure messages, encoded according to ETCS baseline specifications.

Installation and deployment variants

Eurobalises are positioned at critical safety points: approach to signals, transitions between ETCS levels, emergency stops, and gradient changes. ETCS Level 2 and 3 implementations rely on Eurobalises as anchor points for absolute train position when GNSS signals are unreliable. Modern deployments often pair multiple beacons in linked groups so trains receive coherent instruction sets. Installation depth, housing material (typically stainless steel or aluminium), and antenna orientation all affect transmission reliability in wet conditions, frost, and electromagnetic noise from electrified rails.

The name reflects the system's European origin and standardisation under the European Union's railway interoperability directives. Earlier point-based train detection used passive inductive loops; Eurobalises represent a step forward in range and data capacity. Operators must commission balises with specific addresses and telegram payloads, then validate beacon function periodically using trackside test equipment or dedicated service vehicles to ensure no silent failures occur.
