de-electrify: strip the overhead lines and switchgear
De-electrification means removing the electrical infrastructure that powers trains on an electrified railway line. This includes the overhead contact wires, the support structures (catenary poles and brackets), the substations, feeder cables, switchgear, and any other components that make up the traction power supply system. Once de-electrified, a line can only be worked by diesel or battery-powered trains, or must be re-electrified at later cost.
The process happens for economic or operational reasons. A railway operator may de-electrify a lightly used branch line where revenue does not justify the maintenance cost of the overhead system, which requires regular inspection, pantograph wear monitoring, and vegetation clearance. Some lines are de-electrified when passenger or freight demand falls below threshold, making diesel operation more cost-effective. Conversely, poorly electrified routes with aging infrastructure and high fault rates may be de-electrified and rebuilt from scratch rather than repaired piecemeal.
De-electrification is not simply switching off power. The overhead wires must be safely isolated, tested for absence of voltage, and then physically removed. The catenary poles, which typically stand 6 to 9 metres high and are spaced 40 to 60 metres apart, must be unbolted from their foundations or cut down. Substations and their associated cabling are decommissioned and often removed entirely. On busy lines, this work is done in planned possessions (track shutdowns), sometimes lasting several days per section. The removal generates scrap copper, aluminium, and steel that can be recycled.
Distinction from abandonment and re-gauging
De-electrification does not abandon the railway; trains continue to run, but under diesel power or eventually battery power. This is different from full line closure or abandonment, where track is removed. Some railways have de-electrified and then re-electrified the same lines decades later as technology or demand changed. A smaller operation, re-gauging, changes the track gauge (the distance between rails) rather than the power system, and requires different infrastructure work.
The term appears most frequently in British and European railway discussion, where many regional and branch lines electrified in the 1960s and 1970s have since been de-electrified. The decision is often politically contentious, as electrification is seen as a permanent upgrade while de-electrification is perceived as a step backward. However, from a strictly financial standpoint, de-electrification of underused routes can extend the life of a rail network by freeing capital for investment in higher-demand corridors.
