EVAP: the system that catches fuel vapors before they escape

The EVAP system prevents gasoline vapor from venting into the atmosphere. When fuel sits in the tank, it naturally evaporates, especially in warm conditions. Rather than letting those hydrocarbons escape, the EVAP system captures the vapor and routes it into the engine's intake to be burned with the fuel charge. This keeps volatile organic compounds (VOCs) out of the air and satisfies emissions regulations that have been in place in the United States since the 1970s.

A typical EVAP system has four main components: the fuel tank (which must be sealed except for one vent), a charcoal canister that absorbs fuel vapors, a purge valve that meters vapor flow into the intake manifold during engine operation, and a vent valve that allows the canister to breathe. The charcoal canister can hold several grams of fuel vapor before it becomes saturated. When the engine runs, engine vacuum opens the purge valve, allowing the stored vapors to flow into the engine where they mix with incoming air and fuel and combust normally.

Diagnosis and common failures

The most frequent EVAP failure is a leaking fuel cap, which causes the system to lose pressure and triggers a check engine light. A faulty purge valve can allow gasoline vapor into the charcoal canister when it should be blocked, or fail to open when the engine needs to draw vapor for combustion. Cracks in fuel lines, a saturated canister that no longer absorbs vapor, or a stuck vent valve will also set diagnostic trouble codes. A small leak (smaller than 0.02 inches in diameter) activates a loose fuel cap code; larger leaks trigger more serious codes that require system inspection and repair.

EVAP systems vary slightly by region and vehicle class. Vehicles in states with stricter emissions standards (California and the Northeast states) often use two-stage canister systems or enhanced monitoring. Motorcycles and small engines typically lack EVAP systems entirely. Because the system is sealed and operates partly under vacuum, refrigerant lines, rubber hoses, and valves can degrade or crack from age and heat cycling, especially in hot climates where fuel vapor pressure is highest.

The name EVAP is purely an abbreviation, though technicians sometimes use the older term charcoal canister system when referring to the whole assembly. The system bears no moving parts except the purge and vent valves, making it inherently reliable, but the network of hoses and connections provides many points where leaks can develop. Regular fuel cap inspection is the simplest maintenance step; a tight cap costs under five dollars and prevents most nuisance code triggers.
