BLIS: radar that watches your blind spot for you

Blind spot information system, or BLIS, is a driver assistance technology that uses radar or camera sensors mounted on the rear quarters of a vehicle to detect other vehicles in the zones beside and slightly behind the car that are not visible in side mirrors. When a vehicle enters these danger zones, BLIS alerts the driver through a warning light (usually an amber triangle or icon) in the wing mirror housing, the instrument cluster, or both. On some systems, the light pulses or the mirror itself illuminates to draw attention.

Most BLIS implementations rely on radar sensors positioned in the rear bumper or quarter panels, typically operating at 77 GHz frequency. These sensors scan a detection zone roughly 60 to 80 meters behind and 1.5 to 2 meters to the side of the vehicle. Some systems combine radar with camera input for redundancy or better object classification. The system distinguishes between stationary objects (road signs, guardrails) and moving vehicles, filtering out false positives that would create nuisance warnings.

How BLIS prevents accidents

BLIS addresses a real hazard: the blind spot created by a vehicle's structural pillars and mirrors cannot be eliminated by adjustment alone. A car in this zone may be invisible to a driver about to change lanes. BLIS triggers at speeds typically between 30 and 200 km/h, above which the system becomes less relevant because lane changes happen more deliberately. The system deactivates below roughly 15 km/h to avoid false alerts in parking situations or slow traffic.

The technology has limitations. It cannot detect motorcycles reliably in all conditions, especially at night or in heavy rain when radar performance degrades. A system that detects only one of two motorcycles in adjacent lanes creates false confidence rather than safety. Users must understand that BLIS supplements, not replaces, the mirror check and shoulder glance that remain essential before any lane change.

BLIS became standard on many European and premium vehicles in the 2000s and has since migrated down-market. OEM implementations from Volvo, BMW, and Mercedes set early benchmarks. The system's reliability improved considerably as radar and processing chips matured, reducing calibration drift and sensitivity to dirt or moisture on sensor surfaces. It is now offered on vehicles across most price segments, though implementation quality and false positive rates still vary noticeably between manufacturers.
