A powdered substance, such as charcoal or bituminous coal, applied to the face of a mould, or mixed with the sand that forms it, to give a fine smooth surface to the casting.

Facing is a fine powder dusted or mixed into the topmost layer of a sand mould, where it meets the molten metal. It creates a barrier that prevents the sand from bonding to the casting and produces a smoother surface finish than the bulk mould sand alone. Without facing, castings emerge rough and pitted, requiring extensive grinding or shot-blasting to clean.
Common facing materials include sea coal (finely ground bituminous coal), charcoal, graphite, and silica flour. Sea coal is the workhorse of ferrous casting because it burns away cleanly at casting temperature, leaving no hard residue. Graphite works well for non-ferrous metals and produces a darker, harder surface. Silica flour suits precision work but can lock onto the casting in high-iron applications, making knockout difficult.
Facing is applied in two ways: dry dusting, where powder is sifted directly onto the mould surface before closing the cope and drag, or wet mixing, where the facing agent is blended into the top inch or two of facing sand before the mould is assembled. Dry facing gives finer control and uses less material; wet facing is more forgiving because the powder stays embedded in the sand layer.
Why it matters in practice
The facing layer is typically 6 to 12 mm thick and works because its lower melting point and higher burn-off rate create a temporary barrier. When molten metal reaches the mould face, the facing oxidizes and gases off, leaving a thin slag layer that lubricates the casting surface and prevents metal penetration. Too little facing leaves surface defects; too much wastes material and can trap gas.
Facing is a cheap insurance against scrap. A casting with a poor surface finish from inadequate facing costs more to finish than the facing powder itself. Foundries working to automotive or machinery specifications cannot ignore it. The facing layer is also where much of the visible casting defect detective work happens: rough patches, metal pickup, and pinholes often trace back to facing problems rather than bulk mould issues.
