Facework is the task of excavating, drilling, blasting, or loading coal, ore, or other mineral directly from the exposed working surface, or face, of a mine. The face is the active edge where the ore body or seam meets the surrounding rock. All the machinery and labour associated with extracting material from this boundary counts as facework, as opposed to auxiliary tasks like haulage, ventilation, or support.
In coal mines, facework typically involves a shearer machine running along the coalface on powered supports called chocks or shields. The shearer cuts coal and delivers it to a conveyor (armoured flexible conveyor or AFC) that runs parallel to the face. A miner operating the shearer must attend to its position, height, and speed, monitoring for roof stability and shearing quality. Teams of one to three workers may work a single coal face during a shift, adjusting support props or shields as the face advances.
In hard rock mining, facework means drilling blast holes into the rock face, inserting explosive charges, and detonating them to fragment ore. Ore is then loaded into haul trucks or onto conveyor systems. The pace of facework determines production: a coal mine with a slow-moving or frequently stopped shearer, or a hard rock pit where drilling and blasting cannot keep up with loading capacity, will underperform across the entire operation.
Hazards and variations
Facework poses the highest occupational risk in mining. In underground coal mines, roof falls, spontaneous combustion, methane outbursts, and dust accumulation threaten workers at the face. In surface and underground hard rock mines, poor blast design, flyrock, and uncontrolled fragmentation create hazard. Fatigue and stress from noise, heat, dust, and isolation are chronic. Modern mechanisation has reduced direct manual facework in many developed coal operations, but the term remains standard and many mines, especially in coal, still employ large facework crews.
Facework conditions vary widely by geology and depth. A thin, crumbly coal seam requires constant propping and careful pillar extraction; a thick, stable seam allows faster advance. Hard rock faces may be competent granite or unstable, weathered schist. The term encompasses both the physical work and the site where it happens, making it central to mining vocabulary and scheduling.
