fascine

Originally a cylindrical bundle of small sticks of wood, and now often a bundle of plastic pipes, bound together, and used for strengthening purposes, such as in revetments for riverbanks, and in mats for dams, jetties, etc.

A fascine is a tightly bound cylindrical bundle, traditionally made from brushwood or thin branches, now often fabricated from PVC pipes or synthetic materials. The bundle typically measures 0.3 to 0.5 metres in diameter and can extend several metres in length. Fascines are deployed where soil erosion control and structural reinforcement are needed simultaneously, particularly along riverbanks, canal embankments, and coastal defenses where water flow and ground instability pose concurrent risks.

The original fascine, still in use, consists of willow rods, hazel branches, or birch twigs gathered into a cylinder and bound with wire or twine at intervals of 30 to 60 centimetres. These deteriorate over time but provide excellent permeability and can integrate with natural riparian vegetation. Modern synthetic variants use PVC pipes or polypropylene tubes bundled around a central core, offering longer service life (15 to 25 years) and predictable performance in brackish or polluted water where organic material degrades rapidly. Coir (coconut fiber) fascines represent a middle ground, biodegradable but more durable than fresh wood.

Installation and function

Fascines work by distributing loads across soft ground and anchoring loose sediment. They are laid horizontally in layers, often in mattress form called a fascine mat, and pinned or weighted to resist scour and flotation. In riverbank stabilization, they sit at the toe of a slope or along the bed, absorbing turbulence and trapping silt during floods. The spaces between branches allow water to flow through rather than around, reducing hydraulic pressure that would otherwise undermine the bank. In dam and weir construction, fascines form the core of spillway mattresses and aprons, where their flexibility allows them to settle without cracking as underlying soil compacts.

Failure modes include flotation during high water if insufficiently weighted, fragmentation under extreme scour or abrasion, and compression failure if overloaded. Organic fascines are vulnerable to rot, particularly in warm freshwater where bacterial activity is rapid; synthetic versions resist this but may become brittle in sunlight over 10 to 15 years. The name derives from the Latin fasces, the bundle of rods that symbolized Roman authority, and the term has remained unchanged across European hydraulic engineering traditions for over 300 years.

Fascines occupy a distinct niche between rigid sheet piling (expensive, high impact) and loose mattresses of stone or geotextile (less durable, larger footprint). They are favored in heritage work, riparian restoration, and low-energy embankment projects where some settlement is acceptable and naturalistic appearance matters. Specification depends on flow velocity, expected lifespan, and whether organic or synthetic bundling suits the water chemistry and budget constraints of the contract.
