A faucet aerator is a threaded insert that screws onto the outlet of a tap, breaking the water stream into many thin jets and mixing in air. The result is a full-feeling spray that uses roughly 1 to 2 gallons per minute instead of 3 to 5 gallons per minute from an unaerated outlet. This mixing happens inside a small brass or plastic chamber, typically 1 to 1.5 inches long, packed with screens and baffles that do the work.
The core mechanism relies on a series of metal or plastic discs with small perforations, usually between 0.5 and 1 millimeter in diameter. Water passes through these holes and collides with air drawn in from openings around the aerator body. The turbulence creates an aerated flow with visible tiny bubbles throughout. Most aerators contain two to four mesh screens stacked under the perforated plates; these trap debris and further break up the stream.
Common failure modes and maintenance
Hard water deposits and sediment are the primary enemies of aerators. Mineral buildup inside the screens restricts flow and can block holes entirely, forcing water to dribble or spray unevenly. Debris from old pipes or corroded fittings gets trapped in the mesh. Cleaning requires unscrewing the aerator (usually by hand or with a wrench on the body, not the screen) and soaking the internal parts in white vinegar for several hours or overnight, then rinsing and reassembling. If flow remains low after cleaning, the aerator typically needs replacement rather than repair; they are inexpensive and not designed for disassembly beyond the screen layer.
Two main types exist in residential use. Standard aerators with turbulator inserts produce a narrower, more solid stream suitable for kitchen and bathroom sinks. Low-flow or water-saving models have smaller orifices and tighter screens, restricting output to 0.5 to 1.5 gallons per minute, often required by building code in new construction. Some aerators have dual spray positions, controlled by a collar that shifts water from aerated to straight spray or vice versa.
The term aerator reflects its function precisely: it aerates, introducing air. The device became standard in residential plumbing by the 1980s as utilities recognized water consumption savings; federal regulations in the United States now mandate aerators on new faucets at 2.2 gallons per minute maximum. Replacement aerators are universal or near-universal across brands, though the thread size and gender (male or female connection) vary by faucet design. A clogged aerator is often the first thing a plumber or homeowner checks when a faucet's flow suddenly decreases, since replacement costs a dollar or two and takes seconds.
