This method was standard before mechanical swaging and modern compression fittings became common, and remains in use for specialized lead work, particularly in restoration and heritage plumbing systems.
The actual procedure involves heating the joint with a torch until both pipe ends and the solder reach working temperature, typically around 600 to 700 degrees Fahrenheit for lead solder. A bundle of cloth, canvas, or specially prepared leather, often wrapped around the end of a stick or held in gloved hands, is then used to stroke and compress the semi-liquid solder around the joint. The repeated wiping action shapes the material into a fillet or collar, typically 3 to 4 inches long, that bonds mechanically and chemically to both pipes. Proper technique requires steady hand control and good heat management to prevent the solder from setting too quickly or flowing away from the joint.
Variations and Materials
The solder composition matters significantly. Traditional wiped joints typically use a 50/50 tin-lead alloy or similar ratios, chosen for its plastic range and flow characteristics. Some craftspeople prefer 40/60 or other blends depending on joint geometry and ambient temperature. Modern lead-free alternatives exist but behave differently and require adjusted technique. The cloth pad itself varies: some plumbers prefer wet cotton rags to manage heat, others use leather or specialized wiping pads that resist sticking to the solder.
A properly wiped joint is visible and recognizable by its distinctive bulging collar around the pipe junction. Poor wiping produces weak joints with voids, excessive solder buildup, or incomplete penetration. Common failures occur when the joint cools too quickly, the pipes were not heated sufficiently beforehand, or the cloth moved too fast. Testing a wiped joint requires inspection of its surface texture and, in some cases, pressure testing.
The term arises simply from the primary action: the joint is shaped by wiping. This vocabulary is now somewhat specialized, confined to heritage plumbing work, organ pipe construction, and certain industrial applications where lead pipe persists. Most contemporary plumbing has replaced wiped joints with soldered copper connections (which do not require hand wiping) or mechanical fittings, making the skill increasingly rare among younger tradespeople.
