The aperture that limits the field of view of a lens.

field stop: the aperture that frames your view

A field stop is a physical aperture, usually a circular or rectangular opening, placed in the optical path of an imaging system to define the boundary of what the lens can see. It sits at or near an image plane and acts as a hard cutoff: light rays that would form an image beyond the field stop's edges are simply blocked. The result is a sharply defined field of view, no fuzzy vignetting, just a clean limit to the image area.

Field stops are distinct from aperture stops, which control light intensity and depth of field by limiting the diameter of the lens itself. A field stop instead defines the extent of the scene that gets recorded. In a microscope, the field stop is often an iris diaphragm in the intermediate image plane; in a camera, it might be the edge of the sensor itself, or a separate mechanical stop near the focal plane. Some optical designs use a combination: a field stop to set the viewing boundary, and an aperture stop to set the f-number.

The location of the field stop matters because it determines which rays are blocked. A stop placed exactly at an intermediate image plane gives the sharpest edge definition and is standard in well-designed instruments. If the stop is displaced from this plane, the edges of the field become softer and may show color fringing or other aberrations. The size of the field stop, measured in millimeters or as an angle in degrees, directly sets the maximum field of view of the system.

In practice, field stops prevent light from regions outside the intended image area from scattered reflection inside the optical tube. Without one, stray light bounces off internal surfaces and creates veiling glare or ghost images. This is why quality optical instruments, from telescopes to industrial inspection cameras, are careful about where they place their field stops and how large they make them. A slightly undersized field stop trades off a tiny loss of view area for much cleaner, higher-contrast images.

The term "field" refers to the spatial field of view, as opposed to the "aperture" that controls the luminous opening of the lens. Field stops are also called field diaphragms, field irises, or simply field apertures depending on context and whether they are fixed or variable. In optical design, the position and size of the field stop is one of the fundamental parameters calculated early in the layout process.
