A splice or seam made in the field (not factory) where overlapping sheets are joined together using an adhesive, splicing tape, or heat or solvent welding.

A field seam is a joint created during installation between two sheets of material, typically membrane, roofing, or waterproofing product, that are bonded together using methods applied directly at the work location rather than in a controlled factory environment. The two sheets overlap by a specified distance (commonly 2 to 4 inches for roofing membranes) and are then joined using adhesive, thermal welding, or solvent-based fusing depending on the material type and design specification.

Field seams are inevitable in most roofing and waterproofing projects because rolls of material arrive in finite widths, typically 10 to 20 feet. The total coverage area almost always exceeds what a single sheet can cover. Unlike factory seams, which are made under controlled temperature, pressure, and humidity, field seams must be executed in whatever weather conditions are present, creating quality variability. The installer must prepare the overlap zone by cleaning debris, ensuring proper surface contact, and then apply the joining method specified in the project documents.

Common joining methods

Thermoplastic sheets like PVC and TPO are often joined using hot-air welding guns that soften the material edges to approximately 600 degrees Fahrenheit, fusing them into a single monolithic mass. EPDM rubber membranes typically use contact cement or splicing tape, where the tape is a pre-made composite strip that bridges the overlap and bonds both sheets simultaneously. Bituminous membranes may be sealed with mastic adhesive, heat, or both. Each method has minimum overlap requirements and curing times that vary by material and ambient conditions. Cold temperatures, moisture, and wind can all degrade final seam strength if ignored.

Field seam quality directly affects the waterproofing integrity of a roof or foundation assembly. Poor seam work, whether from insufficient overlap, contaminated surfaces, inadequate adhesive coverage, or thermal underheating, is a leading source of premature failure and water infiltration. Inspectors routinely check seams with pull tests, visual examination under UV light, or thermal imaging to detect voids and weak spots. The location of field seams can be strategized during design to place them away from high-traffic zones or stress points where possible.

The term distinguishes this installation method from factory-applied seams, which are executed on specialized machinery under constant environmental monitoring and are therefore generally more reliable. However, factory seams require the entire roof or waterproofing layer to be fabricated as one piece off-site and transported to the job, which is impractical for most buildings. Field seams are therefore the practical standard, and their success depends on installer skill, material quality, adherence to specifications, and favorable working conditions.
