A finisher is a tracked or wheeled construction machine that spreads and levels hot asphalt paving mix across a road surface immediately after it leaves the paver truck. It rides behind the paver, receiving material from a receiving hopper or conveyor system, then distributes it across the full width of the roadway through a screed board that can be adjusted for depth and slope. The operator controls thickness, crown, and edge quality in real time.

Most finishers work with asphalt concrete that arrives at temperatures between 140 and 160 degrees Celsius. The machine features electric or hydraulic heating elements to keep the material workable, a screed plate that can be angled or crowned to match the road profile, and vibratory or oscillating mechanisms to consolidate and smooth the placed material. Widths typically range from 2 to 4 meters, though modular screeds can extend this. Tracked models provide better weight distribution and traction on soft subgrades; wheeled versions are faster for highway work and easier to reposition.

The critical adjustment is screed temperature and pressure. If the screed runs too cold, the asphalt tears and leaves voids; too hot and it can segregate or shove sideways. Finish quality depends heavily on consistent material delivery from the paver, proper slope adjustment (typically 2 to 4 percent), and operator skill in reading the screed ahead of placed material. Poor asphalt density, rutting, or surface waves almost always trace back to finisher settings or technique rather than equipment failure.

Finishers are distinct from pavers: the paver breaks up and lays aggregate-rich mix at the point of discharge; the finisher refines and compacts what the paver places. On small jobs or repair work, one machine may do both functions, but highway and commercial projects use dedicated pavers followed by dedicated finishers to maintain speed and control surface quality across the full pass width.

The name reflects the machine's purpose: it delivers the finished surface layer, free of obvious defects and within tolerance for subsequent rolling and trafficking. Maintenance focuses on screed alignment, heater element integrity, and hydraulic system cleanliness; asphalt residue buildup on the screed requires regular cleaning to maintain release and prevent streaking.
