A slick is a high-quality photographic print or reflective artwork prepared specifically for reproduction by a printer. It serves as the original from which the printer photographs or scans to create the negatives and plates needed for offset lithography, flexography, or letterpress production. The slick itself is not printed; it is the master image that precedes all downstream reproduction steps.
The term originates from the glossy, smooth surface typical of these proofs. A slick was traditionally a glossy photograph mounted on stiff board, with precise color separations and registration marks already in place. The surface finish minimizes texture and reflection artifacts when the image is reproduced photographically. Modern slicks may be digital files output to glossy photographic paper or directly to printing systems via PDF or TIFF, but the principle remains the same: a dimensionally stable, high-contrast original ready for camera or scanner.
Slicks are still used in short-run commercial printing, packaging, and label production, though digital workflows have reduced their role in many shops. A printer receiving a slick expects it to be color-corrected, stripped (with all elements in final position and registration), and free of unwanted marks or repairs. For multi-color work, separate slicks may be provided for each color separation, each one a positive image ready to be photographed to create the corresponding printing plate.
The quality of the slick directly affects print quality. Dust, creasing, fading, or misalignment will be faithfully reproduced on the plate and transferred to every printed sheet. Printers often ask for slicks to be delivered in a protective sleeve and stored flat. Digital prepress has largely replaced physical slick preparation, but the term persists in older shops and in specifications that reference traditional offset workflows.
