flashing collar

an accessory flashing used to cover and/or seal soil pipe vents and other penetrations through a roof (sometimes referred to as roof jack or flashing boot).

A flashing collar is a metal or rubber boot that wraps around a vent pipe, chimney, or other vertical penetration where it passes through a roof surface. Its job is simple but critical: to prevent water from running down the pipe and into the building. The collar bridges the gap between the pipe's outer diameter and the roof plane, shedding rain outward and downward into the surrounding shingles or membrane.

Most flashing collars are made from aluminum, galvanized steel, or rubber (typically EPDM or synthetic rubber). Metal collars work best on steep roofs and in climates with strong UV exposure; rubber boots are gentler on delicate roofing materials and flex with thermal movement, making them common on low-slope and flat roofs. The collar sits in two layers: a base flange that slides under or over the roofing material, and an upper boot that grips the pipe itself. Proper installation means the flange overlaps shingles or membrane in the downhill direction, following the same shingle-over-shingle principle that keeps water moving outward.

Failure modes are predictable. If the collar rusts through, if the rubber hardens and cracks, or if it was installed flush against the pipe without the flange properly sealed, water will find its way inside. Wind can also lift the edge of a poorly fastened flange. Most leaks appear in winter or after heavy rain, when water pressure against the flashing increases. The damage often shows up well inside the building, making diagnosis slow.

Sizing and replacement

Collars come in standard sizes to match common pipe diameters: 1.5 inch, 2 inch, 3 inch, 4 inch, and larger. Mismatched sizing is common in retrofit work and creates gaps. Replacement requires removing old fasteners, prying up roofing material, and sliding the new collar under the shingles or membrane before resealing. On membrane roofs, the base flange is often adhered with roof cement or compatible adhesive rather than fastened with nails.

Flashing collars are sometimes called roof jacks or flashing boots, especially in regional or HVAC trade language. They're distinct from roof flashing used around chimneys or skylights, which cover larger areas, but the principle is identical. Quality varies; cheap stamped-steel collars may rust within a decade, while thick aluminum or premium rubber boots often last the roof's lifetime. Building codes require them on all through-roof penetrations; inspectors check that the flange is properly lapped and sealed.
