A railroad freight car which is used to transport bulk materials in a hopper, the load being usually discharged through one or more hinged doors at the bottom of the car.

A hopper car is a railroad freight car designed to carry loose bulk materials, such as grain, coal, ore, sand, or chemicals, that can be loaded from the top and discharged from the bottom. The car's frame supports a large hopper, a funnel-shaped or V-shaped bin that directs material downward toward discharge openings. Unlike boxcars or flatcars, hopper cars exploit gravity to both load and unload efficiently, making them indispensable for high-volume commodity transport.

Hopper cars exist in several configurations. Open-top hoppers, used for coal and ores, have minimal weather protection. Covered hoppers protect grain and chemicals from rain and contamination, with a roof fitted with access hatches for loading. Gondolas are open cars with sloped sides but no hopper structure; they suit heavier materials like scrap metal. The capacity typically ranges from 70 to 150 tons depending on material density and car size. Underframe discharge doors are hinged or sliding gates, operated manually, pneumatically, or by gravity alone when the lading is sufficiently fluid.

Loading occurs at terminal facilities, tipples, or loading stations where material flows from elevated bins or conveyor systems into the open top. Unloading requires the car to be positioned over a pit, track pan, or ground-level hopper, and the doors opened. For very fine materials like flour or cement, air slides or vibrators keep material flowing against bridging. The slope angle of the hopper is critical: too shallow and material hangs up; too steep and wall stress rises. Typical slopes run 45 to 60 degrees from horizontal.

Operational constraints and wear

Hopper cars bear significant abuse. Abrasive materials like ore or sand scour the interior, requiring periodic re-plating of wear surfaces. Wet materials create sticking and frozen loads; heating systems or chemical additives help release stubborn cargo. Corrosion from saline chemicals or salt spray demands protective coatings or stainless steel construction in marine service. Regular inspection of discharge doors, hinges, and the hopper floor is essential to prevent catastrophic leakage in transit.

The hopper car emerged in the late 19th century as American railroads sought to move mineral resources and grain cheaply at scale. The term "hopper" derives from the device's resemblance to a grain hopper, a farm implement. Hopper cars remain the workhorse of bulk commodity logistics, competing with trucking for short to medium distances and dominating long-haul transport where rail economics prevail. Industry standards for dimensions, coupler types, and capacity are set by the Association of American Railroads.
