A flat lock is a mechanical joint between two metal panels where the folded edges hook together without protruding above the panel surface. One panel edge is folded back on itself to create a hook; the other panel is folded underneath and crimped or clinched into that hook. The result is a water-resistant seam that sits flush with the finished plane of the cladding, with no visible fasteners and minimal thermal bridging.
This joining method is standard in metal roofing and wall cladding, particularly with standing seam systems in aluminum, steel, and copper. The flat profile allows for cleaner aesthetics than exposed fasteners or raised seams, and the mechanical interlock eliminates the need for sealants that can degrade. The panels are typically 16 to 24 inches wide; the seam itself adds negligible width once locked.
How it performs and where it fails
Flat lock seams resist wind uplift because the hook geometry resists lateral separation, though strength depends on metal thickness, fold geometry, and the quality of the crimp. Water runs down the flat surface and is shed at the lower edge of each seam. Problems arise when: the fold is not sharp enough to grip; the crimp is incomplete or off-center; panels are installed with uneven tension; or thermal expansion causes racking at panel joints. In high-wind zones or on curved surfaces, flat lock systems may require supplementary mechanical fasteners.
Installation speed is a key advantage: panels can be hooked and crimped in sequence without waiting for sealant to cure, and the job requires minimal specialized training once crews understand the fold geometry. Disassembly is possible for repairs or replacement, though it usually requires cutting or drilling the crimp.
The term reflects the seam's defining feature: unlike standing seam systems where the joint protrudes in an inverted V profile, a flat lock stays level with the panel face. The method is older than modern standing seam technology but remains competitive in applications where aesthetic concealment and speed matter more than the premium thickness and wind ratings of mechanically fastened or welded systems.
