fleeceware: garments made from pile-knit synthetics

Fleeceware is apparel constructed from fleece fabric, typically polyester or polyester-blend knits with a raised, fuzzy pile surface on one or both sides. The fabric is usually made by knitting a base layer and then brushing or napping the surface to create the characteristic soft texture. Common fleeceware includes pullovers, jackets, sweatpants, hats, and gloves, though the term extends to any finished garment where fleece is the primary structural material.

The fleece itself begins as a warp or weft-knit textile, most often 100% polyester or polyester-cotton blends, weighing between 200 and 400 grams per square meter. Manufacturers brush the knit surface with fine-toothed mechanical cards or flame-treat it to raise fibers, creating the pile. This napping process increases insulation by trapping air within the raised fibers while reducing the fabric weight compared to dense knits. The resulting material is inherently wrinkle-resistant, quick-drying, and easier to care for than wool fleece, which drives its dominance in industrial and consumer workwear.

Production variants and performance grades

Fleeceware quality varies significantly by pile density, fiber fineness, and finishing treatments. Brushed fleece has a shorter, finer pile suited to lighter layers and mid-weight wear. Sheared fleece has a uniform, controlled pile height achieved by cutting the surface with special shears after napping. Double-sided or bilateral fleece has pile raised on both faces, common in jackets and pullovers for maximum warmth. Some manufacturers apply water-repellent coatings or use textured weaves to improve durability in outdoor or industrial settings.

Common defects in fleeceware production include pilling, where fibers ball up on the surface through abrasion, uneven napping from inconsistent brush pressure, and seam slippage where the knit structure separates along stitched seams. The low density of fleece makes it prone to snagging on rough surfaces. Colorfastness can suffer if dyes are not properly set before napping, since the brushing process can expose undyed fibers. Flame-treating, while effective for controlled pile creation, must be monitored carefully to avoid yellowing or brittle spots.

Fleeceware remains distinct from woven pile fabrics (corduroy, velveteen) and from terry cloth, which uses loop pile rather than cut pile. In industrial contexts, fleece garments are valued for insulation without bulk and for low static buildup in certain manufacturing environments. The term entered common use in the 1990s as polyester fleece became the standard alternative to wool and down for cold-weather workwear, and it now covers a broad category from disposable promotional apparel to high-performance outerwear.
