Garter stitch is the simplest knitted structure, made by working either knit stitches on every row (in flat knitting) or alternating knit and purl rounds (in circular knitting). The result is a fabric with prominent horizontal ridges on both sides, created because each row of knits sits on top of a row of purls. Unlike stockinette stitch, which requires consistent tension and produces a smoother surface, garter stitch is forgiving: tension inconsistencies are less visible, and the fabric has substantial grip and resistance to curling at the edges.

The name comes from the garter, a band worn to hold up a sock or stocking. Historically, garters were knitted in this stitch because its thickness and elasticity made it ideal for that purpose. The term persists in modern knitting terminology even though the stitch is now used far more broadly, in everything from dishcloths to baby blankets to the cuffs and edges of fitted garments.

Production characteristics and limitations

Garter stitch consumes roughly 30 percent more yarn than stockinette stitch at the same gauge because the fabric is thicker and denser. This affects yield and cost in industrial knitting. The stitch produces roughly equal numbers of ridges horizontally and vertically, so a fabric that measures 10 ridges per inch will also have 10 ridges per inch running vertically. Machines knitting garter in the round alternate between knit and purl needles on consecutive passes, requiring either a flatbed with reversible action or a circular machine with interlock mechanics.

Because garter stitch lacks the smooth face of stockinette, it is rarely used for garments where visual clarity or stitch definition matters. It resists curling because both sides have identical structure, making it useful for blankets, wraps, and scarves where edge control is important. However, the stiffness and thickness can make it uncomfortable against skin in summer garments, limiting its use in lightweight knitwear.

In industrial production, garter stitch demands consistent gauge control. Variation in tension between knit and purl rows creates visible waves in the finished fabric. Pilling is also more noticeable on garter than on other stitches because the raised ridges catch and snag fibers more readily. Yarn choice matters: loosely spun or lightly twisted fibers show the stitch structure less distinctly than tightly spun yarn.
