In coal mining, flushing is the deliberate filling of worked-out underground spaces, called goafs, using a slurry of water and finely divided material. The slurry, typically made from colliery waste, tailings, or specially prepared fine coal, is pumped through pipes or allowed to flow by gravity into the void. As the water drains away through natural permeability or installed sumps, the solids compact into a stable mass that can support overlying strata and prevent subsidence of the surface.
The material used for flushing varies by mine geology and available waste. Coal washery refuse, containing fine coal and clay particles, is common because it is on-site and requires disposal anyway. Some operations use tailings from adjacent minerals, stone dust, or prepared cement-based pastes for critical areas requiring higher strength. The water content of the slurry is critical: too thin and the solids do not compact adequately; too thick and it will not flow to fill distant parts of the goaf.
Flushing differs from dry stowing, where solid material is dumped into the void without water, and from paste backfill, where the slurry is formulated to remain cohesive and contribute load-bearing strength to the mine structure itself. Flush filling is typically a mine closure or partial abandonment technique rather than a production support method.
Practical constraints and failure modes are significant. The water must be able to escape; if it becomes trapped, hydrostatic pressure can build and cause the fill to return to slurry state or worse, breach into adjacent seams or the surface. Pipes and pumps risk blockage from oversized particles or incomplete mixing. Uneven distribution leaves voids, particularly in complex pillar and panel layouts. Ground movement during and after draining can cause surface cracks even when flushing is technically successful.
The term "flush" here derives from the water flush that carries and then drains from the solids; it is distinct from other mining uses of the word, such as flushing a blast hole with water to remove fine dust. Flushing is regulated under subsidence and mine closure legislation in most coal-bearing regions because improper flushing has historically led to sudden subsidences years or decades later.
