metalman: the miner who raises the roof
A metalman is a specialist underground worker whose job is to remove part of the mine roof to increase headroom in the working area. This is not demolition; it is precise excavation of the strata directly above the coal seam or ore body, done after the main extraction has begun. The goal is to create adequate working height for miners to operate safely and efficiently as they continue to extract mineral from the floor.
The term comes from the nature of the material being removed. In coal mines, the metalman works through the metal, the miners' colloquial name for the hard rock and shale that sits immediately above a seam. This overlying strata can be several feet thick and must be worked away in stages as the seam itself is extracted, creating what is called a gob or waste area behind. The metalman uses picks, chisels, or small explosive charges to loosen and remove this rock, preparing the space for the coal getters who follow.
In deeper or larger operations, the work might be divided: a metalman prepares the roof; hewers or cutters work the seam itself; and timber men or prop workers install supports. In shallower, smaller mines or where seams are already tall enough, a single worker might perform all these tasks. The metalman works from below, standing on the coal or ore that has already been broken, striking upward at the roof strata. In some districts the role was called a getter or header, though these terms could also apply to the seam worker.
The work is hazardous. Loose rock falls without warning; poor support leads to roof collapse. The metalman must judge the stability of the strata above and work in a way that does not destabilize larger sections. In many mines, the metalman's work was followed immediately by the installation of wooden props or later, steel supports, to hold the new roof in place. Speed and judgment were equally important: work too fast and you create danger; work too slowly and production suffers.
The role declined with mechanization in the twentieth century. Modern longwall and continuous mining methods reduce or eliminate the need for hand roof extraction, though in smaller or selective extraction sites, the work persists in modified form. The term itself is now largely historical, found mainly in accounts of traditional coal mining and in the administrative records and wage books of pit operators from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
