focal depth: how much distance stays sharp in your image

Focal depth is the zone of distance in front of a camera or optical instrument within which objects appear acceptably sharp. It is not a single plane but a zone, extending both in front of and behind the point of sharpest focus. This zone is also called depth of field, and the two terms are used interchangeably in most optical work, though focal depth emphasizes measurement of the actual distance span rather than the field of view concept.

Focal depth is controlled by three factors: aperture size, focal length of the lens, and the distance from the lens to the subject being focused on. A smaller aperture (higher f-number, such as f/16) produces greater focal depth; a larger aperture (lower f-number, such as f/2.8) produces shallower focal depth. Longer focal lengths at a fixed aperture also reduce focal depth. Close focusing distances reduce focal depth dramatically, while distant subjects allow deep focal depth even at wide apertures.

In precision work, focal depth matters critically. Macro photography at 1:1 magnification may have focal depth of just millimeters or less, requiring stopping down to f/22 or smaller to hold sufficient sharpness across a small object. In contrast, landscape photography often needs focal depth measured in meters or tens of meters, achievable at moderate apertures like f/8 or f/11. Industrial inspection cameras, microscopes, and coordinate measuring machines all demand careful focal depth management to capture fine detail across the required working area.

When focal depth is too shallow, critical details fall out of focus. A quality control inspector checking a threaded part may find the thread roots in focus but the crests blurred. Conversely, excessive focal depth often signals underutilized resolution, since the lens is stopped down further than necessary. This costs light and can introduce diffraction softening, reducing the actual sharpness the system could deliver at a wider aperture.

The term focal depth comes from the depth of focus in the focal plane itself, the region where the image sensor or film can be placed and still capture acceptable sharpness. In camera systems, this is measured in fractions of a millimeter. The related term depth of field refers to the same thing measured from the subject side of the lens, in the world being photographed. Optical engineers often prefer focal depth when discussing sensor placement tolerances; photographers and imaging technicians more often use depth of field.
