focal plane: where light converges after a lens
The focal plane is the plane perpendicular to the optical axis where light rays converge after passing through a lens or reflecting off a mirror. For a simple converging lens, this is the plane at the focal length distance from the lens surface, where parallel incoming rays meet at a single point called the focal point. In practical imaging systems, the focal plane is where you position your sensor, film, or screen to capture a sharp image.
Different optical systems produce focal planes at different distances depending on lens design. A camera lens with a 50 mm focal length has its focal plane 50 mm behind the principal plane of the lens; a telescope objective with a longer focal length pushes the focal plane further back, which is why telescopes are longer than cameras. Curved mirrors also produce focal planes; a parabolic mirror used in searchlights or satellite dishes concentrates light at a focal plane perpendicular to the mirror surface. The focal plane is not infinitesimally thin in practice: optical aberrations and diffraction mean there is always a small zone of acceptable sharpness called the depth of focus.
Focal plane alignment and tolerances
Precision positioning of the focal plane is critical in imaging instruments. In a camera, the sensor must sit exactly on the focal plane, typically within 0.1 mm or tighter tolerance. In manufacturing, focal plane flatness is verified by optical testing; any deviation causes uneven focus across the image frame. When a lens is mounted into a mechanical assembly, shims or threaded spacers adjust the back focal distance so the focal plane aligns with the sensor or viewfinder.
The term appears most commonly in the phrase focal plane shutter, a mechanism in cameras that opens directly at or very near the focal plane. This design allows faster exposure times and more even flash synchronization than older shutters positioned in front of the lens. In telescope work, finding the focal plane is fundamental: astronomers place eyepieces, spectrographs, or cameras at the focal plane of the primary mirror or objective lens to observe and record light.
