To fog out is to rapidly ventilate a confined space, typically a room or small building, by opening windows and doors to allow smoke, fumes, or airborne contaminants to escape into the outside air. The term comes from the visible appearance of smoke or mist fogging out through the opening as pressure or air movement forces it outward. It is a crude but immediate response to indoor smoke accumulation, whether from a fire, welding operations, chemical spill, or similar incident.

In industrial settings, fogging out serves as emergency ventilation when mechanical systems are offline, overwhelmed, or not available. A welder might fog out a small workshop after heavy stick electrode work. A factory supervisor might fog out a storage room after a chemical container leak. The action is fast and requires no equipment: locate and open the largest available windows and doors, preferably on opposite sides of the space to create cross-ventilation. The goal is to replace contaminated indoor air with clean outside air as quickly as possible.

Fogging out is not a substitute for proper ventilation design or respiratory protection. It works only if outdoor air is cleaner than indoor air and if the contaminant is not toxic at very low concentrations. In cold climates, rapid window opening causes heat loss and discomfort. If the smoke or fumes are from an active fire or ongoing chemical release, fogging out may disperse the hazard rather than eliminate its source. Workers should never fog out a space containing an uncontrolled hazard without first ensuring they have a safe exit route and without alerting others who may be downwind of the exhaust.

The term appears in older safety literature and remains in use on shop floors, though it is less common in facilities with engineered HVAC systems. Regulatory frameworks and modern industrial hygiene practice emphasize engineered ventilation over emergency fogging out, which is recognized as a temporary measure only. Where air quality is critical, as in pharmaceutical or semiconductor manufacturing, fogging out would be unacceptable and could trigger facility shutdown.
