A hose jacket is a rigid or semi-rigid sleeve that clamps tightly around a section of damaged hose to seal or contain a leak or small burst. It works by compressing the hose material inward and creating a mechanical seal that stops fluid or gas from escaping. The jacket itself is typically made from aluminum, steel, or reinforced elastomer, with internal clamp bolts or band tighteners that can be cinched down by hand or wrench without requiring special tools or power equipment.
Hose jackets come in two basic configurations. The split jacket has a hinged opening along its length and a bolt-down flange, allowing it to slide over an already-installed hose in place. The wrap-around type comes as separate curved sections that lock together with clamps, useful when the hose cannot be removed or repositioned. Both types are sized to match common hose diameters, typically ranging from 0.5 inches to 2 inches or larger on industrial equipment.
Common use and limitations
Hose jackets are emergency or temporary repairs only. They hold pressure just long enough to allow safe shutdown of equipment, evacuation of nearby workers, or controlled rerouting of flow to a secondary line. A properly applied jacket can typically contain leaks in low-pressure hoses (under 50 psi) for several hours; beyond that, permanent replacement is required. They are not suitable for steam lines, lines carrying corrosive or reactive fluids, or hoses under sustained high pressure, because the compressed section remains a permanent weak point.
The main failure mode is slippage if the hose material is wet, oily, or heavily textured; rough the contact surface first if you have time. Overtightening the clamp bolts can crush the hose completely, blocking flow without actually sealing the leak. The jacket does not address the root cause of the damage, whether that is abrasion, impact, thermal stress, or age-related degradation.
Every shop that runs pneumatic, hydraulic, or water-cooled machinery should keep hose jackets in assorted sizes on hand. They are inexpensive, require no training to apply, and have prevented many plant shutdowns and minor injuries. They sit in the safety toolbox alongside tape, clamps, and spare hose sections, as part of the front-line response to unexpected fluid loss before the maintenance crew can source and install a replacement.
