four-stroking

Abnormal operation of a two-stroke internal combustion engine, such that the cylinder only fires every second cycle (like a four-stroke engine). This occurs when the exhaust scavenging and inlet charging leaves a mixture in the cylinder which does not ignite, but needs a second scavenge/charge to produce an adequate mix.

Four-stroking is an operational fault in two-stroke engines where combustion occurs only on alternate engine cycles, so the engine effectively runs at half its normal firing frequency. A healthy two-stroke fires once per crankshaft revolution; a four-stroking engine fires once every two revolutions, mimicking four-stroke behavior. The symptom is unmistakable: a distinct "boom-boom... boom-boom" exhaust sound with visible power gaps.

The fault originates in scavenging failure. Two-stroke engines rely on precise timing of ports, not valves, to expel exhaust gases and draw fresh fuel-air mixture into the cylinder. When this exchange is incomplete or the mixture is too lean, the cylinder contains too little fuel or too much residual exhaust gas. The spark plug ignites this poor mixture weakly or not at all. On the following cycle, the fresh charge mixes with residue from the failed ignition, finally producing a mixture rich enough to burn. This creates the alternating fire-no-fire pattern.

Four-stroking most commonly appears in small two-stroke engines, especially chainsaws, outboards, and portable power equipment, when fuel mixture is too lean. Inadequate oil content in the fuel, carburettor jet blockage, or intake air leaks all reduce fuel delivery. Engine load matters too: the condition often worsens under part-throttle operation, where port timing and mixture quality are less forgiving. Cold-start conditions, worn piston rings that reduce compression, and incorrect ignition timing also trigger it.

The phenomenon wastes fuel and creates excessive exhaust smoke because unburned charge exits the cylinder unused, re-entering the combustion chamber on the next cycle. Prolonged four-stroking indicates incomplete combustion and risk of carbon buildup. Unlike a true four-stroke, which tolerates occasional misfire, two-strokes are not designed for this duty cycle and suffer accelerated wear.

The name reflects the deception: the engine sounds like a four-stroke because it fires at four-stroke frequency, but it is fundamentally a two-stroke running badly. Diagnosis requires listening, checking fuel mixture strength, examining spark plug color (should be tan to brown, not black or white), and inspecting carburetor and fuel lines for blockage or air leaks.
