Four-tracking is the installation of four parallel running lines on a section of railway, typically configured as two tracks in each direction. It differs from double-tracking, which provides only one line per direction. The upgrade allows separate handling of local and express services, freight and passenger traffic, or simply provides headway relief on congested routes where single-direction capacity has become the bottleneck.

The motivation for four-tracking is almost always operational separation. On a busy commuter corridor, one pair of tracks might carry all-stop local services while the other pair carries express trains that skip intermediate stations. This prevents slow trains from blocking faster ones and allows independent scheduling of the two services. Freight operators similarly benefit when they can use dedicated lines without interfering with passenger timetables. The cost is substantial: new earthworks, additional bridges or level crossings, new signalling infrastructure, and often land acquisition.

Spacing and integration

Four-tracking requires careful layout design. Tracks are typically spaced 4.7 to 5.0 metres apart (centre to centre) to allow safe passage of maintenance equipment and workers. Platforms must be positioned to serve the appropriate pair of lines, and crossovers between the two directions must be strategically placed to allow trains to switch lines when needed for maintenance, service changes, or emergency routing. The complexity multiplies at junctions and stations where four tracks must be sorted into different destinations.

Four-tracking is common on high-traffic metropolitan rail systems and some intercity corridors. It represents a mid-point solution: cheaper than building an entirely new line but more expensive than the modest signalling upgrades that might wring a few extra trains per hour from an existing double-tracked route. Once installed, four-tracking typically supports frequencies of 10 to 20 trains per hour per direction, depending on dwell times and signal spacing.

The term is most prevalent in North American and British railway practice. European railways often achieve similar capacity through different signalling systems (moving block systems, for instance) rather than additional tracks, though four-tracking does occur on some major continental routes. Maintenance and inspection of four parallel tracks also demands more staff and depot space than double-tracking, a cost often overlooked in initial business cases.
