A frame table is a heavy steel platform with a grid of adjustment points used to hold a vehicle frame in the correct geometric position during repair, assembly, or measurement. The table itself must be perfectly flat and square, typically made from welded steel tubing or a solid steel plate with a grid pattern of threaded holes or clamping stations. It serves as the reference plane against which the frame is checked and corrected.

The core function is to lock the frame in true position so technicians can measure diagonal distances, check twist, confirm that mounting points sit at specification height, and perform straightening work. Clamps, towers, and hydraulic rams attach to the table's grid at precise coordinates. The frame is secured at multiple points, usually at suspension pick-up points or mounting brackets, then checked with measuring tapes or specialized frame gauges to verify that actual dimensions match the vehicle's blueprint.

Variants and Configurations

Portable frame tables are bolted to a shop floor and weigh several tons; some shops use modular systems with removable sections. Dedicated vehicle frame straightening tables often have integral hydraulic pull stations and built-in alignment fixtures. Some tables sit atop floor anchors; others bolt directly to concrete. The grid spacing, hole diameter, and clamping force capacity vary widely depending on the vehicle class the shop is built to serve, from small cars to heavy trucks or trailers.

Flatness and squareness of the table itself is critical; if the reference surface is twisted or warped, every frame work on it will be wrong. Tables are checked against certified straight edges and often rechecked after heavy pulls. A damaged or out-of-square frame table creates cascading errors: misaligned suspension, uneven tire wear, steering pull, and structural weakness that affects crash performance.

The name reflects its literal purpose: it is a table that holds the frame. In the collision repair and frame straightening trades, having a true frame table is as fundamental as having a level concrete floor. It is the foundation of frame work accuracy.
