French cleat: interlocking wooden strips that carry heavy loads
A French cleat is a pair of wooden strips, each with a 45-degree beveled edge, designed to interlock and hang from a wall stud or solid backing. One strip, the male cleat, is fastened to the back of a cabinet, mirror, or artwork; the other, the female cleat, is anchored directly to the wall or framing. The male cleat slides down and locks onto the female cleat, creating a strong mechanical joint that distributes weight across the mounting surface. This simple geometry makes French cleats capable of supporting surprisingly heavy loads, often in the range of 100 to 300 pounds per pair, depending on the wood species, fastener type, and wall construction.
The cleat strips are typically made from hardwood (oak, maple, or birch) or softwood (pine, fir) in a 1.5-inch to 2-inch depth, with lengths ranging from 12 to 48 inches or longer for large pieces. The 45-degree angle is the standard; shallower angles reduce holding power while steeper angles can cause the joined pieces to slide apart. Both strips are usually 0.75 to 1.25 inches thick. Fasteners matter: the female cleat must be lag-bolted or screwed into wall studs, not drywall alone, or the system will fail. The male cleat is typically screwed to the back of the object being hung, with the fasteners driven well back from the beveled edge to avoid splitting.
Variants and practical use
Variations exist for special cases. Offset cleats use strips of slightly different lengths to allow fine vertical adjustment before locking in place. Double-sided or continuous cleats run the full width of an object to reduce stress concentration. Some craftspeople taper the male cleat to reduce the visible profile when the piece is hung. Industrial applications sometimes use metal versions, typically aluminum or steel angle stock, for museum displays and architectural installations where load requirements exceed wood capacity or where adjustment and repositioning are frequent.
French cleats fail when the female cleat is installed into drywall without backing, when fasteners are undersized, or when the beveled edges are worn or misaligned after years of use. Shimming the female cleat to ensure it is perfectly level is critical; an unlevel mounting will allow gravity to work the male cleat sideways, eventually causing it to slip. The system also depends on friction and mechanical lock, so any object that swings or receives impact loading is a poor candidate.
The origin of the name is unclear, though the device has been used for centuries in European furniture making and cabinetry. It remains standard in fine woodworking and museum installation because it requires no complex hardware, allows easy removal and repositioning without wall damage, and distributes load more evenly than a single-point mount or drywall anchor.
