A friar is a localized failure in ink coverage on a printed sheet, appearing as a white or noticeably pale patch against the intended color. The defect ranges from the size of a pinhead to several millimeters across, and occurs in offset lithography, flexography, and letterpress work. It is purely an inking problem, not a paper defect or registration error, and renders affected areas unacceptable in quality-critical work.

The name likely derives from the resemblance of pale spots to a monk's tonsured head, though the etymology is not certain in modern printing literature. The term is now considered dated, having largely given way to more specific terminology like hickey (for defects caused by particles on the plate or blanket) or ink starvation (for systemic under-inking across a zone).

Friars most commonly result from insufficient ink film thickness in the inking unit, uneven roller pressure, worn or glazed rollers, or localized areas where the printing surface fails to accept ink properly. In offset printing, a friar may indicate that the fountain solution concentration is incorrect, causing the non-image area to reject ink unevenly. Debris lodged in the inking train can also create isolated spots where ink cannot transfer. Prevention requires regular inspection of rollers, maintenance of proper dampening balance, and clean printing surfaces.

Because friars are inconsistent and difficult to predict, they are often more troublesome in production than systemic problems. A single sheet with a friar must typically be culled and reprinted. In high-volume runs, the defect may appear randomly on only a fraction of impressions, making detection by sampling unreliable and increasing waste rates substantially.

Modern printing has shifted toward describing the root cause rather than using friar as a catch-all term, and QA documentation now specifies whether a defect is a coating failure, ink transfer fault, or surface contamination. However, in older trade literature and among experienced press operators, the word remains in use as shorthand for any localized pale patch of unexplained origin.
