camera-ready: print-ready artwork without further editing
Camera-ready refers to finished artwork, mechanicals, or digital files that require no further alteration before the printing process begins. The term originates from offset lithography, where camera operators would photograph printed mechanicals directly to produce printing plates. Today it describes any master file or physical paste-up that meets all specifications for color separation, resolution, crop marks, and bleed requirements, ready to be imaged onto plate material or sent to a digital printing engine.
The physical camera-ready mechanical, now largely obsolete, was a composite assembly on stiff board or film. It consisted of positioned type, images, and color separations taped or waxed into exact registration. Each piece had to align precisely to 0.5 point accuracy. Keylines indicated where color breaks would occur. Crop marks, registration marks, and fold lines were drawn in non-printing blue pencil so they would not appear on the film or plate.
Digital camera-ready files now replace paste-ups in nearly all commercial printing. These are typically PDFs or native files in CMYK color space at 300 dpi minimum for offset and flexographic work. All fonts must be embedded or outlined; images must be linked and supplied at correct resolution; bleeds must extend 0.125 to 0.25 inches beyond trim; and all separations, varnish layers, or special inks must be on separate plates or PDF pages with clear labeling. Files that meet these requirements go directly to RIP software without designer intervention.
What makes a file not ready
Common failures: RGB color space instead of CMYK, which requires conversion and risks color shift; embedded fonts with restricted licensing that prevent output; missing or low-resolution images; incorrect trim dimensions; missing crop or registration marks; or spot color specifications that were never converted to process separations. A file that looks correct on screen may fail in production if these technical requirements are ignored.
The term persists even though no camera is involved in modern digital workflows. Press operators expect the file to arrive in exactly the state needed for imaging, proofing, and makeready. Any file requiring corrections or resizing pushes the job back to the design desk and delays the press schedule. Camera-ready status is therefore a formal quality checkpoint: the designer certifies that all technical requirements are met and the file can move directly into production without revision.
