Frogging is the deliberate unravelling of knitted or woven fabric to correct errors, usually by pulling out completed rows or sections of stitches. The work is then re-knitted or re-woven from the point where the mistake occurred. In hand knitting, this might mean unravelling a single row; in textile production, it can involve undoing metres of fabric if a defect is discovered during quality inspection.
The term comes from the phrase "rip it," which sounds like a frog croaking. Hand knitters adopted "frog" as a verb (hence the gerund "frogging"), and the term is now standard across the textile trade. A knitter "frogging" their work is taking it to the frog, metaphorically speaking.
In industrial production, frogging is a controlled but labour-intensive process. When a quality inspector identifies a pattern fault, colour mismatch, or dropped stitch in fabric still on the loom or in finishing, the affected section must be unravelled completely and the loops brought back to an open state. This requires precision to avoid damaging the individual fibres or yarns. Fine fabrics with complex patterns incur higher frogging costs because the rework is technically demanding and time-consuming.
Frogging becomes necessary when pattern errors emerge during weaving, knitting, or in the finishing stage. Common triggers include colour sequence mistakes in jacquard work, inconsistent tension causing visible texture changes, or structural faults like broken yarns that create holes. Once frogging begins, all stitches or picks above the fault line must be removed before repair work restarts.
The cost of frogging varies sharply by fabric type and loom speed. High-speed industrial looms running basic plain weaves experience lower frogging rates because faults are less frequent and easier to remedy. Specialty knit goods and hand-operated or semi-automated jacquard looms see higher frogging rates, sometimes 2 to 5 percent of total production depending on complexity and operator experience. Frogging time is absorbed into production cost and delivery schedules, making error prevention far cheaper than correction.
