A frunk is a storage compartment positioned ahead of the windshield, under the hood where a traditional internal combustion engine would sit. The term, a portmanteau of "front" and "trunk," emerged in the early 2010s as electric vehicles with compact powertrains made this layout practical. In a gas-powered car, this space is dead weight; in an EV, it becomes usable cargo volume.
Electric vehicles from manufacturers like Tesla, Nissan (Leaf), and Porsche (Taycan) use frunks because their battery packs sit low in the chassis and their motors are compact. A typical frunk holds 100 to 180 liters, enough for luggage, spare wheels, or emergency equipment. Access is usually by manual hood release or power actuator. The space remains cold in winter and unheated in summer, making it suitable for perishables but not temperature-sensitive electronics.
Frunks present practical constraints unknown to rear-trunk owners. Crumple zones for frontal collision protection limit how much weight engineers can stack forward safely. The compartment sits directly above the suspension, so uneven loading affects handling more noticeably than rear-loaded cargo would. Drainage holes prevent water pooling, but they can't prevent moisture from accumulating during humid storage.
When frunks fail or frustrate
The latch mechanism, like any power actuator, can stick or fail electrically, trapping contents. Some owners report that the frunk lid doesn't clear added roof racks or tall front-mounted sensors, reducing practical access. In cold climates, ice buildup around the seal can jam the lid shut. A few vehicles have encountered complaints about wind noise from poor sealing at highway speeds.The frunk sits within a wider trend of space reclamation in EV design. As makers strip out transmission tunnels and tank housings, they rethink the entire volume budget. Some vehicles now offer both a frunk and an underseat storage, plus a rear trunk, creating three zones where a gas car had only one. This multiplies organizational options but also creates new failure points and user confusion about weight distribution limits.
