A winter tire is a pneumatic tire engineered to perform in cold conditions, typically when ambient temperature drops below 7 degrees Celsius, where summer compounds harden and lose traction. The fundamental difference lies in the rubber compound: winter tires use elastomers that remain pliable at low temperatures, maintaining sufficient grip on snow and ice that would cause a summer tire to slip. The tread pattern also differs, with more numerous, smaller sipes (thin cuts) designed to bite into snow crystals and improve braking force on packed snow surfaces.

Winter tires sacrifice performance and longevity in warm climates to gain cold-weather adhesion. At temperatures above 10 degrees Celsius, the softer rubber begins to wear rapidly, reducing tread depth faster than a summer or all-season tire. This asymmetric trade-off means winter tires are genuinely efficient only during their intended season; running them year-round wastes rubber and money. Regulations in several jurisdictions, particularly in Scandinavia and Canada, legally mandate winter tires during winter months on certain road types, reflecting the safety-critical nature of winter traction.

Winter tire compounds typically contain higher concentrations of aromatic resins and silicas compared to summer formulations, lowering the glass-transition temperature so the rubber flexes even when cold. Tread depths for winter tires often start at 10 millimeters or more, compared to 8 millimeters for all-season variants, since snow compression reduces effective depth quickly. Studs, metal carbide pins embedded in the tread, appear on some winter tires to provide ice-grip but damage road surfaces; many regions restrict or ban them.

Winter vs. All-Season Performance

All-season tires aim for a middle ground, sacrificing some winter traction to avoid excessive summer wear. Testing shows winter tires reduce braking distance on snow by 25 to 40 percent compared to all-season tires, a difference that matters in emergency stops. Handling and acceleration on snow also improve, though the compound remains a compromise that performs poorly at extremes of either temperature range.

The name is literal: these tires are designed for winter conditions, not autumn or early spring. European standards (EU 1222/2009) define winter tires by minimum performance thresholds on ice and snow rather than by compound alone, so some all-season tires can meet winter classification if their tread geometry and siping patterns are aggressive enough. Nonetheless, true winter tires remain the standard choice where winter precipitation is routine and safety margins are tight.
