full-length: fabric or garment from shoulder to ankle

In textile production, full-length refers to fabric panels or finished garments that extend the complete vertical span of the human body, typically from the shoulder seam or neckline to the ankle or floor. For woven goods, this determines the cut length needed before pattern pieces are laid out. For apparel, it distinguishes a design class: a full-length dress, skirt, or coat will use significantly more yardage than a knee-length or midi equivalent of the same style.

The term matters most in fabric ordering and pattern grading. A full-length drape curtain might need 108 inches (2.74 metres) of goods; a full-length coat pattern typically requires 2.5 to 3 yards of 54-inch goods depending on width and seam allowances. Mills and converters stock full-length samples as standard reference pieces. When a buyer specifies full-length versus cropped or hemmed-to-order, it affects both the cut length issued from the loom and the finishing processes applied downstream.

Where the term is precise and where it blurs

Full-length is straightforward for tailored garments: a jacket reaches the hip, a dress reaches the ankle. The ambiguity enters with proportional fit. A full-length sleeve on one size may hit the wrist; on a much taller frame it stops mid-forearm. Grading patterns across sizes requires adjustment of vertical dimensions, meaning a nominally full-length design may need length modifications at multiple points of production. Petite and tall ranges often add or subtract length at the hem and armhole simultaneously.

In apparel production, full-length sometimes appears as a visual rather than a technical specification. A designer sketch marked full-length tells the pattern maker to draft a floor-length silhouette, but the exact yardage and seam placement depend on the target size range and intended drape. Fabrics with nap or directional print require more waste; fabrics cut on the grain require less. Both affect how much raw goods must be ordered to yield the specified number of full-length pieces.

The term entered common trade use because mills needed a shorthand for stock length: full-length bolt goods are typically rolled to industry-standard lengths (often 30 or 40 metres) so that cutters and manufacturers know what coverage they have. Full-length as a designation communicates that no hemming or shortening is built into the base cost; any modification is a secondary operation and a change order.
