A solution consisting essentially of aluminium acetate, used as a mordant in the fixation of dyestuffs on vegetable fiber.

Red liquor is a chemical solution used in textile dyeing to help fix dyes permanently onto natural fibers, especially cotton, linen, and other cellulose materials. Despite its name, it has nothing to do with color; the term comes from its historical role in producing red shades on fabric. The active ingredient is aluminium acetate, a salt formed by reacting aluminium compounds with acetic acid. It works by creating chemical bonds between the dye molecules and the fiber structure, improving color fastness and preventing the dye from washing out.

The solution typically contains 5 to 15 percent aluminium acetate by weight, mixed with water and small amounts of acetic acid to maintain the correct pH, usually between 3 and 5. Mills prepare red liquor either by purchasing concentrated solutions that are diluted before use, or in some cases by preparing it on site from aluminium sulfate and sodium acetate. The consistency and strength vary depending on the fiber type being dyed and the particular dye being fixed.

Application and variants

Red liquor is applied to fabric after dyeing through padding, soaking, or spraying. The mordanted fabric then undergoes gentle heating, typically between 60 and 80 degrees Celsius, to develop the dye-mordant bond. Some operations use a combined dye-liquor bath where red liquor and dye are applied simultaneously. The amount of mordant used affects both the depth of color and the final feel of the fabric; too much can stiffen the material or cause uneven fixation.

The process has largely been superseded in industrial production by synthetic dyes that require no mordant, and by alternative mordanting chemicals like tannin compounds. However, red liquor remains standard in mills specializing in natural dyes, traditional fabrics, and certain heritage textile productions. It is also used for printing with natural dyes where precise color control is needed. Understanding the interaction between specific dyes, fiber content, and red liquor concentration is essential for achieving consistent results.

Common problems include uneven color development if the liquor is applied unevenly or if heating is too rapid, precipitation of aluminium compounds if the pH drifts too high, and yellowing of pale shades when aluminium acetate concentration is excessive. Proper storage in sealed containers away from light prevents decomposition of the mordant. Safety considerations include mild corrosivity and the need for adequate ventilation, though red liquor presents fewer hazards than many other textile chemicals.
