To fur out is to attach furring strips, typically wooden battens or metal channels, to an uneven or recessed surface in order to create a level plane for finishing materials. The strips are fastened perpendicular to the surface beneath, raising the face of the work and allowing drywall, plaster, or paneling to be applied to a true, flat substrate. This technique is foundational in interior construction and mechanical trades where old walls, ceiling joists, or structural elements are too irregular or warped to receive direct finish.

The most common furring materials are 1 by 2 inch timber strips or cold-rolled steel channels. Wood furring is quick and cheap; steel furring offers better fire performance and does not warp, though it conducts heat and requires fasteners rated for metal attachment. Spacing between strips is typically 16 inches on center, matching standard stud and joist intervals. The strips are secured with powder-actuated fasteners, concrete nails, or adhesive depending on the substrate, which may be concrete, masonry, metal decking, or existing framing.

Furring is especially common when leveling concrete basement walls prior to drywall installation, when creating a finished soffit beneath low ductwork or beams, or when retrofitting mechanical systems that have left walls and ceilings uneven. The depth added is minimal, usually 1 to 2 inches, but in some mechanical spaces or below-grade applications furring may extend 3 to 4 inches or more.

Common failure modes and pitfalls

Furring fails when the strips themselves are not plumb or level; any deviation in the furring translates directly to the finished surface. Moisture is another hazard: wood furring absorbs water from damp concrete or humid air and swells, buckling the drywall above. Metal furring avoids this but can rust if not properly coated, and condensation can form on cold steel in humid conditions. Fastener spacing that is too wide or fasteners placed too shallow in the substrate result in movement and cracking of drywall tape and joint compound.

The term "fur" itself comes from the archaic verb meaning to trim or face a surface, related to the fur trim used in tailoring. In modern trade usage, "fur out" and "fur down" distinguish between building up a surface and building down from above, though both accomplish the same leveling aim.
