racetracking: when molten material bypasses the mold edge
Racetracking occurs when molten polymer, metal, or composite material flows along the edge of a mold cavity instead of filling it uniformly. The material takes the path of least resistance, running parallel to the parting line or cavity wall and creating a thin, unfilled channel or void. This defect is most common in injection molding and die casting, where it appears as a groove or ridge running along the edge of the finished part.
The root cause is usually inadequate mold clamping force or uneven pressure distribution across the mold halves. When the mold plates separate slightly, even by a few thousandths of an inch, material escapes into the gap and flows in a thin stream along the perimeter. Poor mold design, such as insufficient venting, abrupt changes in wall thickness, or misaligned cavity features, can also direct flow toward the edges rather than into the cavity itself.
Detection and prevention
Racetracking is easy to spot after demolding: a shallow, elongated void appears near the mold line, often with a slight web or flange of material along one edge. It differs from flash (which is thin excess material) because the channel is actually missing material rather than excess. Parts with racetrack defects fail dimensional checks and are typically scrapped. Prevention requires checking mold alignment, increasing clamp tonnage, improving mold venting near the edges, and redesigning cavities to encourage flow toward the center.
The term draws from racing because the material literally runs a race along the track of the parting line, taking the shortest and easiest route rather than the intended path into the cavity. It is particularly problematic in thin-walled parts and large flat cavities where holding pressure is hard to distribute evenly. In injection molding of thermoplastics, racetracking can often be corrected by adjusting pressure profile and hold time; in die casting of aluminum or zinc, it usually signals a need for tooling repair.
