GALEX: NASA's ultraviolet space telescope for studying galaxies

The Galaxy Evolution Explorer, or GALEX, is a NASA space telescope launched in 2003 that observes the universe in ultraviolet light. Unlike visible-light telescopes, GALEX detects far-ultraviolet and near-ultraviolet radiation, wavelengths between 135 and 280 nanometers. This capability lets astronomers see hot, young stars and measure star formation rates in distant galaxies, data invisible to optical instruments. The spacecraft operated for over a decade and transmitted terabytes of observational data back to Earth before being decommissioned in 2013.

In aviation maintenance work, GALEX enters the vocabulary primarily when technicians and engineers reference astronomical survey data for navigation system checks or when calibrating instruments that use star-field recognition. Some modern avionics rely on celestial reference catalogs derived partly from GALEX observations, particularly for long-range inertial navigation systems that cross-check position against known star positions. Maintenance manuals may cite GALEX data when verifying the accuracy of star-tracking equipment or updating the star databases loaded into an aircraft's navigation computer.

The ultraviolet advantage

Ultraviolet observation reveals stellar properties that visible light cannot. Young, hot stars emit most of their energy in the UV spectrum, so GALEX effectively mapped regions of active star birth. This made the telescope especially valuable for studying the history of star formation across billions of years of cosmic time. The satellite carried a 50-centimeter primary mirror and could resolve objects down to arcsecond scales, fine enough for detailed studies of nearby galaxies.

For aviation personnel, GALEX primarily appears in technical documentation about celestial navigation databases and star-catalog updates. Its observations contribute to the reference catalogs that ground stations use to verify the integrity of an aircraft's inertial measurement unit during pre-flight checks. Anyone working with legacy avionics systems or learning about the data sources behind modern navigation aids will encounter GALEX in training materials and system maintenance records.
