A gender changer is a short adapter with female connectors on one end and male connectors on the other, allowing two plugs of the same gender to be joined. In practice, this means either two male plugs joined via a female-to-female adapter, or two female sockets joined via a male-to-male adapter. The device itself is passive, containing no electronics, and simply extends or reroutes an electrical or signal path where connector orientation would otherwise prevent assembly.

These adapters are common in electronic test benches, control cabinets, and field installations where cable runs are fixed but equipment must be relocated or replaced. A technician might use a gender changer when a newly installed sensor has a male connector but the existing panel socket is also male, or when two pieces of legacy equipment both terminate in female connectors and no cross-gender cable is available. They are manufactured in variants matching standard connector families: D-subminiature (DB-9, DB-25), circular connectors (M12, M23), RJ45, BNC, and others.

The most common failure mode is corrosion of the mating surfaces, particularly in damp industrial environments or where connectors are mated and unmated frequently. Loose contact springs inside the adapter can also degrade over time, introducing intermittent resistance that degrades signal quality or causes intermittent connection loss. Repeated mating cycles wear plating, especially in brass or gold-plated contacts rated for only a few hundred cycles.

The term "gender" in connector terminology refers to the physical form of the interface: male plugs have protruding pins or sleeves; female sockets accept those pins. A gender changer explicitly reverses or matches this mechanical designation. The name is literal and unambiguous in electrical work, though occasionally misunderstood by those unfamiliar with connector nomenclature.

Better practice than relying on gender changers is specifying the correct cross-gender cable upfront or using modular panel-mount connectors that allow receptacle rotation. However, field expedience and equipment constraints often make gender changers a necessary solution in maintenance and troubleshooting.
