gem: a forgotten 4.25-point type size from hot metal days

In the era of metal type, a gem was a specific body size measuring 4.25 points, occupying 222 lines to the foot when set vertically on a page. It sat in the narrow gap between the 4-point brilliant above it and the 4.5-point diamond below it, a distinction that mattered enormously when compositors were hand-setting type or running linecasting machines. The name, like most historical type sizes, carried no obvious logic; foundries simply assigned evocative names to standardize their products across the industry.

Gem type was used primarily for footnotes, marginal annotations, and dense reference material where space was at a premium but legibility could not drop below a certain threshold. Newspapers and academic journals favored it for small print run alongside larger body text. Because it existed in the gap between two more common sizes, gem was never as widely stocked as brilliant or diamond, making it a specialty order at many foundries.

The term gem became obsolete with the transition from hot metal composition (Linotype, Monotype, hand-set metal) to phototypesetting in the 1960s and 1970s, then to digital typography by the 1990s. Modern type measurement uses points as a pure digital unit without the foundry-specific body names. A designer today simply specifies "4.25pt" or uses any named typeface at any exact size; there is no need for the historical categories that once organized thousands of individual metal fonts into searchable families.

Printers and typographers who trained before 1980 still recognize gem, brilliant, and diamond as period vocabulary. Collectors of metal type and historians of printing technology encounter these names in old foundry specimens and compositor manuals. For anyone working with historical documents, reprinting projects, or museum collections of letterpress equipment, understanding the gem size helps date and identify original composition methods.
