George

George: the autopilot that flies the plane for you

In the cockpit, George is the autopilot system, a collection of servos, gyroscopes, and control electronics that maintains a preset altitude, heading, and airspeed without pilot input. The name originated in early aviation, possibly from a 1920s comic strip character or a generic reference to "letting George do it," and stuck because pilots needed a quick, informal term to distinguish the autopilot from the aircraft itself during radio communication and casual conversation.

George operates by receiving reference signals from the aircraft's attitude indicator, heading indicator, and altitude hold mode. Mechanical or later electronic servo motors connected to the control surfaces (ailerons, elevator, rudder) make small corrections to keep the aircraft stable. Modern George systems are far more sophisticated than their predecessors, integrating with flight management systems and capable of holding complex flight plans, but the principle remains the same: remove sustained control inputs from the pilot's shoulders during cruise.

When George fails

Autopilot failures are not rare, and they matter. A stuck servo can produce uncommanded pitch or roll, forcing the pilot to disconnect George and fly manually. Instrument failures that feed bad data to the autopilot (a faulty airspeed indicator or gyro precession error in older systems) can cause the aircraft to diverge from the intended flightpath. Pilots are trained to recognize when George is misbehaving and to disconnect it immediately, typically with a button on the yoke or a switch on the autopilot panel.

George is most useful on longer flights where manual control would exhaust the flight crew. On short hops or in heavy weather, George may stay disengaged. Regulations require that the autopilot be serviceable but do not mandate its use, though many operators prefer to have it functional as a backup and fatigue mitigation tool. Maintenance checks include servo movement ranges, mode annunciation, and engagement and disengagement reliability.
