gigagram: one billion grams, rarely used in practice
A gigagram is a unit of mass in the International System of Units (SI) equal to 109 grams, or 1000 metric tonnes. Its symbol is Gg. While it is technically a valid SI unit, it is almost never encountered in industrial practice because the metric tonne (1000 kg) already fills this range with a cleaner, more familiar number.
The gigagram sits awkwardly between units that are actually used. A metric tonne is 1 Gg; 1000 Gg equals 1 petagram. In bulk commodity trading, shipping, and mining, weights at this scale are expressed as metric tonnes or (in English-speaking countries) short or long tonnes. A large cargo ship might carry 50,000 tonnes of ore, not 50 gigagrams, even though both figures refer to the same mass.
Where gigagrams appear
The gigagram shows up primarily in scientific literature, environmental reporting, and computational models where SI consistency is required. Climate databases might report annual carbon emissions in gigagrams; geological surveys might cite total mineral deposits in gigagrams. Software systems designed to handle all SI prefixes will process the unit correctly, but a human operator in a mill or quarry would rarely, if ever, encounter it on a scale display or shipping manifest.
The term exists because SI prefixes are generated systematically: every jump of three orders of magnitude gets a new prefix. Yet practical metrology ignores most of them. Just as the megagram is almost never used (kilogram and tonne are preferred instead), the gigagram survives mainly to satisfy completeness and to serve specific technical domains where unit consistency matters more than familiarity.
